It's not required, but if you wish to attend a service, please contact the priest before coming so he can make a special effort to look out for you.
You may notice the congregation standing for much of the service. Please, please, please be feel comfortable in sitting if you like! It's a fundamental principle of the Orthodox Church that worship must be practical. Our goal as a church is to help you connect with God and that which is good in yourself. Even people who have been members of the church for years sometimes just sit, close their eyes and enjoy the service.
Divine Liturgy: 9:30 Sunday Morning
The Divine Liturgy is the primary worship service of the Church. The best way to understand what makes the Orthodox Church unique is to attend a liturgy. In Flagstaff, we conduct the Divine Liturgy in English, but other than that, you are joining a form of worship that is simple, beautiful, and timeless. You can listen and participate in worship that is nearly unchanged since 400 A.D.
While only members or members of other Orthodox churches can participate in the Eucharist (Communion), all are welcome to receive Holy Blessed Bread. If you like, you can simply indicate to the priest that while you aren't Orthodox you would like to participate, and you can receive a special blessing instead.
Great Vespers: 6:00 PM Saturday Evening
Vespers, which means literally "Evening" is the other major service of the Orthodox Church. Traditionally, the day is considered to begin at sundown of the previous day. So theologically, Saturday evening is really the beginning of Sunday.
Though different in structure than the Liturgy, it too has come down to us nearly unchanged through the centuries.
